June 2024 Monthly Report
In June 2024, we at Wave served 2,157 hot meals, distributed 219 clothing items, 15 sleeping bags and blankets and 556 hygiene items, ran 227 showers, charged 267 phones and powerbanks, and washed 73 loads of laundry. In the past month we have struggled to operate our prison package service as a consequence of having a low number of volunteers. This is in spite of the fact that the demand for material assistance in Pre-Removal Detention Centres remains considerable.
Updates from June:
In the last weeks we have seen a rise in the number of women, children and families visiting our space, making the days busy and filled with play. Thanks to a donation of table tenis nets, bats and balls, we have all enjoyed playing tournaments with each other.
As mentioned in our last monthly report, we spent the final days of May carrying out a strategic redesign as we aim, in the coming months, to expand the reach of our community centre and meet the changing needs of our community. In keeping with this, we have been carrying out community meetings in order to learn more specifically about what-it-is people would like to see happening in our space and learn how we can offer additional kinds of support. These meetings have been met with a high attendance and engagement- we look forward to making these new ideas happen.
EID AL-ADHA
Earlier in the month we were able to celebrate Eid-Al-Adah- a special occasion in the Islamic calendar that is marked by festivities. Following last year’s celebrations, we were fortunate to honour the occasion again indoors and so our dedicated volunteers spent the morning preparing a feast to be enjoyed by all. For many of our community members, celebrating such an occasion far away from loved ones is a very difficult thing. This is one reason why it is so important that we celebrate these moments together in our community centre. Eid Mubarak to all those who observe!
