February Updates
The start of the month of February 2026 has been quieter than usual at Wave, with a lower attendance of around 60-70 people per day, compared to the previous months of December and January. This trend has changed around mid-February, with the start of Ramadan, when we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of community members, up to 100-120 per opening day. This overall trend is reflected in thenumber of the total population of February 2026, which is lower than the previous months, taken into consideration that December and January have been the busiest months we’ve had in some years!
From the point of view of our operations, the most important news is that we were able to start distributing hot meals inside, starting from February 13th! Our decision to resume hot food distributions was based on the fact that the daily attendance at Wave was back to around 70-80 people per day, which means a safer and more comfortable environment for everyone to enjoy a hot meal inside the space: given the capacity of our Community Centre, safety and security are a priority for us before everything else. That said, it’s been a great pleasure to be able to serve food inside again, the feedback from our Community confirmed: some people told us they would be able to access a meal elsewhere, but they would always prefer to come to Wave for its atmosphere and welcoming environment. A meal is not just about the ingredients or calories it contains, it’s about how it’s served and the company around it.
It’s Ramadan!
February 17th, Ramadan started: at its core, Ramadan revolves around the observance of fasting. Muslims abstain from food, drinks, and other sensual activities from dawn to dusk. This practice is not merely about physical hunger, it’s a way to cultivate discipline, self-control, and gratitude for life’s blessings. Fasting also fosters empathy for those less fortunate.
At Wave, we adapted our services in order to respect every tradition: we are now serving food at 4:30pm and at Iftar (sunset). At Iftar, the meal is accompanied by some small extras: dates, milk or ayran, a hot soup and some extra sweets, like halva or homemade cakes made by our volunteers. The attendance at Iftar is growing and lately we’re hosting around 70 people for the evening break of the fasting.
We want to give a huge THANK YOU for everyone supporting our Ramadan Fundraiser, without your help we would not be able to make our meals a bit more special and nutritious, adding dates, sweets, soups and ayran. You’re amazing!
Changes in our Team
Another change in our team happened at the end of February, as we said goodbye to our Volunteer Coordinator, Chris. You will be missed for the passion and dedication you’ve put into your work, as well as for the energy and vitality around you. We wish you all the best in your next adventures and… See you soon!
At the same time, we are thrilled to introduce you to Ana, who took over the Volunteer Coordinator role. Ana has been at Wave since January 2026 and stands out for her calm, caring and positive attitude. She is a social worker, with quite some experience in different social projects in Greece and Spain. We are very excited for her to be part of the team and we welcome you onboard!
