October Updates
Another month has passed and October has come to an end. As we adapt to the colder temperatures and the start of the rainy days, our services are also evolving to meet the changing needs of our community in the Autumn. It’s been another busy month in our Community Center, and we have welcomed around the same amount of visitors compared to the previous month of September (only +3.5%). As the weather gets colder, the number of laundry loads and showers is decreasing: in any case, our solar-panels-powered system for heating water for the showers guarantees warm water, especially during sunny days. Conversely, we’re witnessing an ever increasing number of requests for winter clothes, shoes or blankets, as our community members are getting ready for the upcoming winter months. Unfortunately, at the moment, we are not able to meet all the requests, due to our limited stock in our warehouse. But we do not want to leave these requests unnoticed, so, in the near future, we are planning a distribution of blankets – scheduled for the first days of November – and a distribution for winter clothes (gloves, hats, thermals, etc) at the beginning of December.
A Reflection from our Team
Finally, I would like to share with you a quick reflection coming from our team. As our Community Space gets more and more visitors in the last few days, it’s good to reflect about one ‘service’ that it’s usually overlooked: feeling comfortable and having a safe space to relax. As the temperature gets colder, most of us can easily go back to our rooms, to our houses, but we are also allowed to access without problems warm shopping centers, bus stations and public spaces. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for people facing homelessness, for whom all these spaces are most likely inaccessible. At Wave, we believe one of our strongest assets is to offer a space where people feel like home, where they can sit and chat with friends or strangers, where they can watch TV or play ping-pong. After all, humans are social animals and one of our needs is to be together with other human beings and feel safe and accepted. Along with the other services that we offer, having a warm and welcoming space is one of the most important.
We want to thank our Community Members first, without them it would not be possible to create such an inclusive atmosphere!
