OCTOBER 2023

In October 2023, we at Wave served 1750 hot meals, welcomed 17 new arrivals, distributed 70 clothing items, 1 sleeping bag and 375 hygiene items, ran 183 showers, charged 242 phones and power banks, and washed 127 loads of laundry. In the past month, we supported 41 people detained in Pre-Removal Detention Centres with clothing, hygiene items and coffee.

 

TEAM EXPANSION

This month, we said goodbye to Paddy, our logistics coordinator for the past six months. Thanks for all the hard work Paddy and we wish you the best back in the UK! We extend a warm welcome to Ruth, our new logistics coordinator, who joined us in February alongside Sam, both having studied a Masters in Human Rights here in Thessaloniki. We are delighted Ruth decided to stay with us and take on the tasks of managing and coordinating stock, materials, and finances. Her enthusiasm, open-mindedness, and working attitude will no doubt make her a great addition to the coordination team! Additionally, we have welcomed three new long-term interns and ten volunteers, significantly expanding our team for the upcoming months! After experiencing a shortage of volunteers in the past few months, we are excited to have a full team again. Their diverse skills and ideas will enable us to offer a  wider variety of culinary dishes at the centre and dedicate time to side projects such as gardening and setting up a compost bin.

 

WIR PACKEN’S AN VISIT

While visiting Thessaloniki this month, Fabian from Wir Packen’s An stopped by our centre! WPA has been a consistent supporter of our project, generously providing clothes for both summer and winter, as well as sleeping bags and hygiene items. During the visit, Fabian kindly helped by making juice, preparing food and cleaning! As the cold weather approaches, we are in drastic need of winter supplies to support our community members, many of whom live in informal and precarious structures, lacking heating and electricity, and people detained in Pre-Removal Detention Centres.
